Rennyr had gone with the guards and the other gladiators to whatever awaited them in the arena this time and Jaine tried to settle in on the upper bunk. Worry for him made her too restless to sit, however, and she paced the length of the cell over and over until she heard the sound of an approaching guard unit. Too soon for him to be done with combat and returning. Dismayed, hoping there wasn’t bad news about Rennyr, she pivoted to watch the trio march up to the force barrier on the cell where she stood.

The officer in charge turned off the power. “Your turn now. Come on, we’re on a tight deadline.” He motioned her forward.

Jaine stayed put, useless though rebellion would be. “What’s happening? Where am I going?”

Symonds stepped into the cell and grabbed her by the arm, dragging her into the corridor even though she offered no resistance. “I was going to be a nice guy and leave the force binders off this time but if you make me mad—or if you make us late—I’ll have the men hog tie you and they will enjoy the job.”

“No, I’ll come. I was surprised to see you. Am I going into the arena after all?” And wouldn’t Rennyr be upset if she was? Jaine started making plans for how to find him in the melee because her only chance for survival was to remain close to him.

“It’s not my job to explain the arrangements to you,” the guard said with an angry sniff as they walked at a fast pace toward the arena. “The consultant will tell you whatever you need to know. If you don’t want to go into the arena naked, we’ve got to move faster.”

Surprised she was going to see Falayla again, especially on a combat day, Jaine couldn’t decide whether to be scared or relieved. Obviously she was going to be thrust into whatever awaited on the sands tonight but maybe Falayla would give her suggestions.

She was taken all the way around the arena, to the far side, which surprised her, since the visiting teams usually occupied the facilities there. Falayla and two assistants waited in the assembly room, ignoring the curious glances from the medics setting up their stations. Today the consultant had her amazing hair in shades of blue and green, with purple glitter, standing away from her head in rigidly sculptured geometric forms and she wore a sparkling tunic over a pair of almost sensible, fitted chartreuse pants. Black reptile skin boots completed the picture.

The assistants were dressed in plain, drab blue suits.

Not allowed to compete with the boss. Jaine was surprised as the guards fell back and she was left standing alone. Falayla advanced on her, grabbing her by the elbow and tugging her to the side, where the assistants began removing her clothes. Jaine protested and tried to stop them, conscious of all the watching eyes, but the consultant said,

“You’re going into the arena in five minutes, dressed or not.
